Nescopeck State Park is located in southern Luzerne County, NEPA. It is serene, primitive, isolated and interesting to hike in. The Nescopeck Creek runs through it. Every predator and non predator that exists in Pennsylvania lives there. While you rarely come face to face with them, there are many signs of their presence (nests, dens, prints, feathers, hair, scat, etc.)

Recently, I decided to hike the Nescopeck. It was a gorgeous day with temperatures in the low 70’s and a nice breeze. I walked along the south side of the lake and headed down a circuit trail that would take me through woodlands and wetlands. There are a dozen or so trails. As usual there was abundant bird song. This was were I saw my first indigo bunting. Because Nescopeck is so wet and wild, it is a haven for all sorts of insect life. Of course, this draws in a large variety of birds.

About a half mile into the hike, I encountered a large (500 lb.) male black bear. Magnificent! We were separated by 30 yards. The bear was beautiful and appeared to be in good health. The adrenaline was flowing. I started slowly backing away and making some clapping sounds. The bear followed me for a short distance and then disappeared into the thick undergrowth. That made my day.

It is difficult to understand why people shoot them.
