Trump has been sworn in. With some of his family, a cadre of loyalists and several billionaires in tow, Donald Trump, without placing his hand on the Bible, took the sacred oath to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. It didn’t take long for citizen Trump to transform into President Trump.
As promised, President Trump issued and signed a large amount of executive orders over the past three days. All of these are being sorted out, evaluated and, where appropriate, challenged. Time will tell if these actions are agreed to by the American people.
I’m sure I will find many of them to be egregious abuses of power. For this post I am concentrating on pardons and commutations. President Trump, himself a convicted felon, issued approximately 1,500 pardons and commuted the sentences of 14 supporters connected with the attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. On that day thousands of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol egged on by Trumps’s baseless claims that the 2020 presidential election was fixed against him.
Some of these people attacked and injured police officers. Some police officers died as result. Trump is smug in his thuggish behavior, arrogant in his dismissal of the truth, and beyond rude in his assault on the American conscience. The police should never forgive him for this affront. Thinking and reasonable Americans will not forgive or forget. This is truly an outrage thrown in the face of all Americans!
President Trump is not a student of anything, let alone history. By his own admission he is not an avid reader nor does he involve himself in diverse opinions. He is brutish, coarse and a bully. He was schooled by his father and characters like Roy Cohn in a city that has a huge crime history. Study his history. It is replete with expressions about pussy grabbing, shooting demonstrators in the legs, admiration for strongmen leaders, etc. His limitations are out there for all to see.
I don’t know what the elected Democrats will do to counter Trump. My advice is to fight fire with fire especially when the fire is lapping at your door. Give him nothing! Fight him on everything! Compromise only when it benefits the poor, needy lower and middle classes! (Workers) Overtly and explicitly explain your positions to the American people. Listen to your elders. (You should know who they are. You have been ignoring them for decades.) Have some intestinal fortitude.
