On a recent trip to Martha’s Vineyard I learned that the island is overrun with people, turkeys and ticks. People, with our superior brain power and free will could solve our Martha’s Vineyard and worldwide overpopulation problem but we haven’t figured out how to apply the aforementioned attributes. Turkeys are survivors and will take advantage of an out of balance ecosystem much like humans have.

Ticks (and many other insects) are formidable warriors. Wage war against them in innumerable ways but you eventually lose. They are super survivors. At least a score of other creatures prey on them including but not limited to opossums, chickens, guinea fowl, TURKEYS, squirrels, blue jays, robins, crows, lizards, frogs, toads, spiders, ants, beetles, centipedes, ducks, bats, mice, shrews and starlings. Additionally, foxes, coyotes, snakes and raptors prey upon rodents who are top hosts for ticks.

The above creatures, many of whom we wantonly slaughter, are our allies in the effort to keep nature balanced. Nature has a balance and if anyone is out of sync with that balance it is HUMANS.

This is old news with an extremely illusive and distasteful remedy. We must rein in our seemingly insatiable and destructive lust/greed for things; land, water, oil, minerals, creatures, money, etc. We are consumption crazy with a predisposition for everything being disposable. This is a formula for extinction.

Just a random thought coming off the island of Martha’s Vineyard.
