America’s problem is not with “illegal”, “undocumented” workers, it is with illegal corporate employers. Our immigration system or lack thereof is all about cheap labor. Just like the bipartisan distain for challenging out of control defense spending, there is a bipartisan reluctance to prosecute corporations for exploiting cheap immigrant labor. Employing illegal aliens at wages so low few citizens could afford to take the jobs is great for profits and stockholders.

This is how it has always been. Household name companies in the Fortune 500 number among the businesses that utilize unauthorized labor. Meat-packers, poultry processors, landscape firms, construction companies, office cleaning firms, hospitality companies, convenience stores and Walmart are filled with illegals.

Forget paying a living wage. Why bother? There is an endless flow of poor people will to work cheap. They need to feed the large families they tend to have and send some money back home. Everyone is happy, right? Of course not, as this system is highly exploitive. Everyone looks the other way because, one or another, money is the driver of this system. Consumers, workers, unions, employers and politicians all mixed together in a true gordian knot.

I say that if you want to halt illegal immigration it seems like we should focus on employers. It makes more sense to go after an employer than to send an army into the streets to capture people one by one.
