Several times I have written about Speciesism. It is the prejudice or discrimination against individuals based solely on their species membership. It typically involves the assumption of human superiority over other animals, which is used to justify their exploitation, mistreatment or unequal moral consideration. Analogous to racism, sexism and ageism for gaining preferential treatment.

It is interesting to discuss people’s justifications for the above. Some say God said it is ok, so it is religious. Some say some philosopher, let’s say Nietzsche, said it is ok, so it is philosophical. Some say it is Darwin so it is survival of the fittest. Some say it is genetic. Some say Mom and Dad said it is ok. Some say it is a personal preference to feel superior. Wow! There is a lot to unpack there.

The point of this post is to highlight one example, experimenting/testing on animals. This is done under the guise of product safety ranging from cosmetics to drugs and a lot in between. The experimentation/testing is done on mice, rats, dogs, cats, pigs and other sentient beings. It has proven to be unnecessary but it is big business. Millions of animals are used each year.

According to the NIH, 95% of all drugs that are shown to be safe in animal experiments fail in human trials. Of course, humans are their own worst enemy. Given the mountains of scientific evidence about the health benefits of an organic plant based diet, it is difficult to comprehend why people continue to eat processed and overcooked foods. The unhealthy standard American diet is big business as is the health care needed to address it.

As a founding member of PCRM, Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, I will continue to advocate for the importance of teaching physicians the importance of prevention. Physicians receive little to no nutrition education.PCRM is working to correct that. Also, PCRM will lead by example by funding and conducting animal-free research. Finally, PCRM will work to empower patients to take control of their own health.

Do some research and become a member.
