Let’s assume that the polls are correct and the Ds will control the House and, maybe, the Senate. Yippee! Let’s celebrate briefly and move on to the next battle. That would be who is the Speaker of the House, Leader in the Senate and what those bodies’ agendas will be.
Hakeem Jeffries is poised to assume the position of Speaker. To me, he is a terrible choice. Why? Over the course of his 13 year career he has taken approximately $1.5 million from AIPAC and a total of 17.5 million dollars from special interest groups. What does AIPAC do? They contribute to political campaigns for both Rs and Ds and support a pro-Israel agenda including billions of dollars for its military. That is the tip of the iceberg and given the genocide we all witnessed in Gaza and the ongoing military actions in Gaza and Lebanon plus the onslaught on Palestinians by illegal West Bank settlements, Jeffries is a compromised choice. When looked at in totality and based on his record he appears to have NO independence. I would prefer Greg Casar, D,TX, Summer Lee, D, PA, Mark Pocan, D, WI, or AOC, D, NY
The Senate is even worse. Senator Schumer has taken tens of millions from PACS. He is highly compromised. For that matter, all members of the Senate are takers of PAC money and only Senator Sanders I, VT, took a different path in that a significant portion of his raised funds come from small donors. Sanders has been consistent over a fifty year political career advocating for majoritarian supported issues like medicare for all, a living wage, right to unionize, corralling bloated military spending, ending corporate welfare, eldercare, environmental/climate issues, childcare, making everyone pay their fair share of taxes, ETC. For me, he is the perfect Senate leader but given that he is 85 years old, I don’t think he would want it. The Senate will be a problem.
Aside from the very serious issues surrounding Trump’s presidency (roll backs of EOs, possible impeachment, Epstein files/photos/videos release and prosecution, tariffs, gutting of the federal government, corruption, ETC) the above issues articulated by Sanders and supported by large majorities of Americans would make for a robust agenda for Congress.
Additionally, getting people on the record in reference to the above would lay some solid groundwork for 2028. That’s right, I said it. Get ready for 2028!
