I am one of the most privileged individuals in the world. I was born in the United States. I had two parents and I am a white heterosexual man. Old white men like me, wrote the rules and our history for the benefit of people like me. What does “Woke” mean to me?
It means correcting that history by adding the information and facts those men conveniently left out. It means knowing a salon worker needs 1250 hours of instruction before being able to color someone’s hair and every commercial kitchen must have an employee take 8 hours of sanitation classes every year, both required to pass a test. Yet, anybody can walk in and buy an AR-15 without any training or testing.
It means that the same people who demand their right to own an AR-15 want to tell me, if and when I should start a family, who I can love or how I chose to live.
It means that those same people want to tell me what books my grandkids or I can read.
This old man is grateful for the varied education and experiences I have had. I strive to learn new things everyday. I’m proud to be “woke”.
